Explore

Spend the day at the Gallery learning from NGV curators and education specialists about Impressionism.

Beginning with the birth of the movement in France in the late nineteenth century, this one-day intensive course introduces the key figures involved in Impressionism’s development, the techniques and identifying styles used by the circle of Impressionist artists, and considers the movement’s legacy and enduring popularity with audiences today – more than a century later.

Presented alongside the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® 2025 exhibition, French Impressionism: From the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on display from 6 Jun – 5 Oct at NGV International.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the social and historical factors that led to the birth of the Impressionist movement in France.
  • Recognise and describe the characteristics and objectives of the Impressionist movement.
  • Identify and discuss key Impressionist artists and their work.
  • Understand the ongoing influence and impact of French Impressionism, including its legacy and interpretation in contemporary contexts.
  • Examine the legacy of Impressionism and how it is being re-interpreted in recent decades.

The course will take place on Saturday 16 August from 9am–4pm. .

Lunch will be provided via a voucher to be redeemed onsite at Gallery Kitchen or Tea Room.

What will this course involve?

This course introduces the social and cultural contexts that shaped the emergence and development of Impressionism in the late nineteenth century in France.

From early pioneers such as Édouard Manet and Claude Monet to influential figures like Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro and others, the course explores how these artists challenged academic conventions and redefined the possibilities of painting.

This immersive one-day program offers an engaging introduction to the key ideas, figures, and innovations of Impressionism, making it an ideal starting point for those looking to deepen their appreciation of art history.
