2025 NGV Annual Appeal

This year, the NGV is seeking your support to help us secure Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Officer and waitress (Offizier und Kellnerin), 1915 for the Gallery’s Collection.

Support the appeal

In this exclusive talk developed especially for NGV Members, learn about one of the first truly modern artists Francisco de Goya y Lucientes.

A prolific painter and official court artist, Goya also made hundreds of drawings and prints that record his private observations, thoughts and dreams. In these uncommissioned works, he gave expression to a vision of humanity that had no equivalent in the art of his day. Poor education, popular superstitions, the abuse of power, envy, greed and violence, all came under Goya’s critical eye as he sought to turn the light of reason on every aspect of human behaviour.

NGV curator Dr Petra Kayser explores why Goya’s observations are as relevant today as they were in his own time, through a richly illustrated presentation that delves into the NGV’s significant collection of works on paper by the renowned Spanish artist.
