Led by award-winning research and design studio DNJ Paper, in this half-day course participants will learn traditional Japanese textile techniques, before applying them to the creation of a piece of contemporary design by making a hand-stitched washi cushion.

The course is inspired by the NGV Kimono exhibition.

About DNJ Paper

DNJ Paper is an award-winning research and design studio based in Melbourne, founded and led by designers Daphne Mohajer va Pesaran and Jake Nakashima-Edwards. The studio employs a diverse range of traditional and non-traditional techniques to create paper-based clothing, accessories, and objects.

DNJ Paper utilises handmade recycled rag paper produced in-house, as well as handmade Japanese washi paper. The washi is sourced from small studios across Japan, with each sheet accompanied by detailed information about its production conditions.

When is the course?

The course takes place on Saturday 13 September from 12–5pm.

What will the course involve?

In this hands-on course, DNJ Paper will introduce their practice and demonstrate how they draw on Japanese materials such as washi paper and traditional Japanese techniques like boro and sashiko stitching. Participants will learn the technique of momigami – a method of transforming washi into a fabric-like material – and use it to create their own hand-stitched washi cushion to take home.

Course enrolment includes all materials.

Suitable for all skill levels, no prior experience necessary.
