About this work

This work depicts Saint Eustace, a Roman general who came across a stag while out hunting. After pursuing the stag, he noticed a cross between its antlers – a moment that led to his conversion to Christianity. Dürer’s rendering gives prominence to five accompanying hunting dogs, each of which he carefully portrays in a different pose, capturing them at various angles to demonstrate his artistic talent.
