Joan Miró was a Spanish painter and printmaker, celebrated for his work that combined abstract art with Surrealist fantasy. He was first initiated into the print media through his association with Surrealist poets and publishers who invited him to provide illustrations for their books. After World War II, he worked extensively in lithography and produced numerous murals, tapestries and sculptures for public spaces. His mature style evolved from the tension between his fanciful, poetic impulses and his vision of the harshness of modern life.
