Ceramic production from the region of Bizen has a history of more than one thousand years, and Bizen ware is considered one of the most important ancient earthenware ceramics in Japan. Isezaki Mitsuru was the eldest son of the famous ceramic artist Isezaki Yozan (1902–61) and the elder brother of Isezaki Jun (born 1936), also a leading Bizen artist. The solid shape, natural splash of ash glaze, and two handles noted in the Japanese title as mimi (ears) are representative of Bizen ceramic traditions.
