Collecting is not the only possible role of a public gallery in the support of its contemporaries. Perhaps it is not even a proper one? It may be argued that if the art is relevant i.e. useful to its society that’s where it shoud be; not in the unnecessary care of a museum. To exhibit the serious, unquestioning work of our contemporaries may be more useful to the artist and to the community. Thus it seems appropriate to examine a direction in Australian Art, by showing new work of six young artists: John Armstrong, Tony Coleing, Aleks Danko, Nigel Lendon, Ti Parks and Imants Tilliers. The career and attitude of each is adumbrated in photographs and text: The six exhibits are portrayed and described. The Department of Australian Art conceived this exhibition. The Department of Exhibitions has been its busy midwife.
